React snippets not working properly in VSCode?

Thursday, January 2nd, 2020

If you have the extension “ES7 React/Redux/GraphQL/React-Native snippets” and the snippets only work once before you have to restart VSCode for them to only work once again, please be aware that this seems to be an issue with VSCode version 1.41.1.

To get around this., you can either downgrade VScode to 1.40.1 to have the extension working normally, or use Ctrl + Alt + R on Windows or Command + Shift + R on Mac to access the snippets.

Google Maps Location Sharing Scam

Monday, December 3rd, 2018

Today I received a notification with the Google Maps logo on my phone and the text (including misspellings):

You Have Recived Free Prize From Google Calm Here [URL]*

(*Note: I removed the actual URL to prevent others from visiting it.)

When I tapped the notification I was taken to Google Maps, and it was showing the message:

You Have Recived Free Prize isn’t sharing with you

These people are very clever in figuring out new ways of scamming others, but they can’t seem to get good at spelling words properly.

I like to learn about these scams, so I wanted to know what the URL does. I used a safe box to visit it from the command line.

The original URL uses Twitter’s short link feature. It then redirects to another domain (which I will omit for obvious reasons), which in turn redirects to another domain, which redirects to yet another domain. All these domains are from NameCheap.

The URL has an ID that if you change it you see a different “giveaway”. The one sent to me was a “Free Phone Case Giveaway”. Another I saw was “Air Jordan Giveaway”.

The page asks for “Shipping Info”, including Name, Email, Address and Country. But then it shows this:

Congratulations, you qualify for our Phone Case Giveaway

Due to an unusual amount of giveaway entries, users are now required to complete a brief human verification process.

And links to a website where you need to fill out a survey, and whoever owns the Id for the link will make money off of you.

Let’s hope Google closes this loophole in Google Maps, along with the other issues that came out last month.

Best dog car seat

Sunday, October 14th, 2018

Since I posted about another product, let me talk about this one too because this may help someone else.

After over 2 years and 2 months waiting for our car, we finally received our Tesla Model 3 back in July. Although it was my order and my wife was not even aware when I made the reservation for the car on April 1st, 2016, I let she do the first drive out of the Tesla Service Center. I know, I don’t know how or why I did it, but you can imagine the anxiety.

You know how it is when you get a new car… I was being very careful with it, so there was no way that I’d let our dog Chewie in the back seats with no cover or any other kind of protection. So I started researching our options. At the time, there was nothing custom for Tesla’s and I couldn’t find any recommendation on the Model 3 forums. So I started looking on Amazon and other sites for recommendations.

I went from those ugly seat covers, to the hammock covers, to pet car seats. Chewie is a rough coat Jack Russell mix, so it would be nice if he could seat higher to look out of the window and bark at bicycles, so we decided to go with a car seat.

The requirements were:

  • Protect the seats from scratches
  • Good size for our small dog to be able to look out the window
  • It has to look nice
  • It has to be safe for Chewie in case of accidents

After looking at many options, I found one that matched our requirements.

This is the one (you can see more about it here: https://amzn.to/2Cgdxyf or click on the picture below):

K&H Pet Products Bucket Booster Pet Seat

Chewie loves it and it keeps him safe, since the seat itself is locked by the seatbelts and it comes with two hooks that you we can lock to his harness.

We liked it so much that we ended up buying a second one to keep in my wife’s car. She used to drive him around in the back seat, but we figured this is a much safer and better option overall. I hope this helps you decide.

Best noise cancelling headphones

Sunday, October 14th, 2018

Today I was talking to a friend about my noise cancelling headphones. It was one of the best purchases I’ve ever made, despite the price tag (at the time) of over $300. They are available now on Amazon for $179. You can click here to check them out: https://amzn.to/2pSQjGV

I don’t travel by plane that much, but at least once a year I take long flights to Brazil or to California (I still live in South Florida). Having the Bose QuietComfort 25 in those flights made a huge difference. They are comfortable, come in a nice travel case and when the noise canceling is on, you might forget you are on a plane. After 3 years they are still going. I just need to replace the pads, but they still work great.

Since I found this was going to be useful to my friend I thought why not share with more people.

They have a new version now Bose QuietComfort 35 (series II), but I haven’t tried those yet. They have the same price tag of the 25 when I bought it 3 years ago, so it’s probably a good idea to get this one if it fits your budget.

What’s not cool about iGoogle

Friday, July 13th, 2007

I live in Brazil in a city called Florianópolis. My town is in the Santa Catarina state… I tried months ago to use the iGoogle (http://www.google.com.br/ig) and went to search for my town on the weather box. Guess what? I haven’t found ANY single city from this state in there. Cool huh?

iGoogle weather
I sent them emails talking about it… no response. Obvious.

Mobile Cooking

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

Minutes ago I was on the IRC and a subject came up:

[22:33] |otherbird| most people I know don’t observe this one, but unfortunately (for me) my landlady does

[22:33] |otherbird| it’d be really rude to suddenly start cooking :\

[22:35] |lig| sandwich++ # no cooking involved

[22:36] |otherbird| d’you think I didn’t already? 🙂

[22:36] |silvano| I cook using my phone 😀

[22:36] |lig| 😀 – I are smart

[22:36] |lig| chinese or pizza?

[22:36] |silvano| both

[22:37] |andrei| silvano, that’s some powerful radiation

[22:37] |silvano| heh

[22:37] |scoates| mmmmmm general tao pepperoni chowza

[22:37] |Rasmus| you could just use it to stir

[22:38] |silvano| wasnt here that I read people talking about cellphones exploding?

[22:39] |silvano| I dont think so… nevermind 😛

[22:39] |zzzbird| 🙂

Then I did a search on google for ‘cooking cellphone’ and what a surprise…

[22:40] |silvano| hah -> http://www.wymsey.co.uk/wymchron/cooking.htm

[22:41] |silvano| “Note: We cooked our egg during the evening using free local calls, if you were to cook an egg for lunch it would cost ?3.00 – not cheap but you do have the convenience.”

Hell… they teach you how to cook an egg using cellphones!!! ahaha

Please try it and let me know if it works! 😛 Thanks!

Google/Yahoo/SE improvement suggestion

Sunday, July 9th, 2006

This weekend I’ve been researching some subjects on google and I noticed the amount of garbage coming in the first pages due to old content. Of course, this problem is not exclusive on google. It happens with Yahoo! and the other Search Engines.
Charts comparing softwares or programming languages or whatever. Discussions on email lists, articles, blogs, etc. All this content was good one or three years ago, but today they are garbage!

It is a pain to find fresh content for certain subjects.

Please tell me if I’m wrong or it is possible already, but they should have a way to order results by date or a way to ignore results older than ‘date’. I know that if you go into Advanced Search you can ask it to show only updated content within 3 months, 6 months or 1 year, but I wonder how it works because it doesn’t really seem to work as I expect.

You can do, for example, a search requesting only contents updated within 3 months and you’ll probably get links to articles such as www.domain.com/articles/2005/03/01/blabla

Do you see what I mean?

New Blog!

Sunday, July 9th, 2006

Finally I’ve taken some time to install wordpress and start my own blog again.

The main focus is to have my own place where I can talk about anything and put links to interesting people/articles/talks/whatever. See the links on the right menu, there are many great talks about many different subjects. I encourage you to click and read them 🙂
As you can see I work with PHP and probably most of the content presented here will be php-related.

I’m not sure if I’ll keep on using English (at least try to :)) or Portuguese (native speaker) it might depend on who is comming to read my blog, of course.
